Fishing Report for Opening Weekend
May 11 was the fishing opener for Minnesota this year and we had 3 cabins come in to fish. One cabin was a group of guys who have been coming to Pelican Lake for decades, one cabin was a couple who have never fished Pelican Lake and the third was a couple who usually come in August but they wanted to try May. Results were mixed. Saturday’s weather was mid 60s for air temperatures and the water was 56 degrees on our side of the lake. The night before we enjoyed amazing northern lights and everyone was pretty tired the morning of opener after having been up late watching the sky dance. The two guys who have fished Pelican nearly every year for decades did extremely well for crappies. They estimated they landed over 60 crappies between them along with a few pike and some bass. The couple who had never fished here before only caught pike and the couple that usually comes in August caught mostly bass with a few pike. Live bait seemed to be the ticket. The crappie were biting on the north side of the lake on rock piles in 5-7 feet of water if you used a slip bobber and had minnows. Bass were biting on leeches and worms while pike seemed to hit anything. Check out the video to get the full report!
