Mid-September Update from Pelican Lake
I love Septembers in northern Minnesota. Usually the temps cool down(not so much this year), the leaves start to change colors, the northern lights are seen more frequently, the fishing is great, most of the bugs are gone and it is much quieter. Plus, if you are a resort owner you only work 12 hour days rather than 16 hours due to it getting dark earlier! This September is shaping up to be one of our best ever. The leaves are just starting to change, some maples are showing some read and there is a yellowish tinge to the birch trees. The fishing? Oh yeah, it has been good. Let me show you…
Our bass fishing has been very good since mid July and got better all through August and has been awesome into September. We saw very few smallmouth getting caught during August but now that it is September we are seeing almost as many smallies as largemouth bass.
The crappie bite has really picked up in the last couple of weeks. Lots of small crappies being caught mixed with some pretty nice ones. The edges of the deep hole between Bald Island and Cope and Peterson Island has been best. Swedish pimples have been the best lure to use.
Surprising myself, we have even caught some nice perch this month. This one here is the biggest I’ve ever caught!
Along with the fishing, I’ve really enjoyed the deep, dark skies and fantastic star gazing opportunities provided up here with no light pollution. Check out these two pics of starry nights…
Love seeing the milky way glowing in the sky!
We have also had several good auroras in the last few weeks. I like this picture of the aurora swirling above the trees.
