Did you know that Minnesota has 75 state parks? Of these, some of the most popular areas are in the northern part of the state. Visitors from around the continent come for the sights and experiences and the quality park system is a big reason.
If you’re looking for a sure thing to add to the itinerary, Orr sits on the precipice of Kabetogama State Forest – which itself holds a vast variety of local parks and camping opportunities. Or, if you want something a little more low-key, the City of Orr Park and Beach is an easy-to-access, highly-rated park perfect for young families looking to stay close to the Orr resort.
Hiking & Biking
Not far from our resort is the Orr Bogwalk, which is an easy, family-friendly boardwalk stroll that takes you deep (though only a half-mile!) into thick wildlife. From there you can see a wide range of swamp life and marshes, home to otters, pelicans, eagles, and much more.
Mountain bikers with an adventurous edge need to look no further than the Gheen Hill Trail System, which is just a few miles south of Orr. In total, there are about 4.5 miles of trails that include opportunities for dynamic sites and varying vegetation. Fishing in Orr
What we would call the main event here in Orr: fishing on Pelican Lake. Pelican’s 11,000 acres and over 50 miles of shoreline provide ample opportunities for families and dedicated fishermen to really experience the best fishing Northern Minnesota has to offer.
When it comes to types of fish, you can catch the usual suspects here at Pelican Lake:
- Bass
- Walleye
- Northern pike
- Crappie
- Bluegill
- Perch
Of course, even as an experienced fisherman, you may not be an expert at this massive lake’s best spots. That’s where a guide can come in. Orr and—if we may brag for a moment—Birch Forest Lodge are home to fishing guides with a contagious passion for the sport.
Don’t be afraid to get in touch with a guide while you’re here and pick their brains for some advice. You just may catch your limit!
